Marg Bratkin - Bowling
A native of Brampton, Marg earned her bowling marks through the industrial leagues in companies such as Dixie Cup and Orenda. While this early bowling took place in the fifties, Marg’s career began to blossom following a move with her family to Georgetown. Meeting top bowlers such as George Barber and George Nurse, Marg began to try her luck on the tournament trail. Her first big win came in the Tournament of Roses event conducted by the proprietors.
The 1967 tournament, which was a pins over average affair, offered a first prize of a trip for two to Montreal to see the Expos, along with several cars. Marg advanced through the league and the house round and won the zone round with a 955 flat triple. In the provincial final, Marg started slowly with 215, but with her 3 game handicap added reached 287, and she followed with 293 and 276 for an 856 triple. Marg’s flat score was good enough for second place, and while Marg didn’t see the Expos, she did win a new 1967 red Ford Mustang.
The 1967 season also saw Marg enter the OV roll-offs for the first time and over the next quarter century, Marg would qualify 23 times and only five bowlers have participated more.
Several Central Ontario ladies teams won provincial titles and Marg won the singles title in 1982 but failed to win the national title, losing the stepladder finals to Christine Danis of Quebec.
Marg also joined the Master Bowlers’ Association. In all, she has won six events, including the Master Bantam Tournament, bowling with her daughter Terrie and Colin Hicks. Marg also won the singles title at the Master Junior in 1972, and the Double Knockout in 1977. In 1974, Marg, without winning a tournament, won the aggregate title as the top average in the province. The Masters nationals were held in Regina, and Marg won the Canadian Title with a mere one pin victory over Jenny Irvine of Saskatchewan.
Marg continued her winning ways in the Masters, taking the Brunswick Rose Festival in 1980, earning her large MBA diamond with six tournament victories.
Marg’s illustrious career has also featured wins at the O’Connor Open, a perfect game in 1983 at Brampton Bowl, and wins in several local events in the Georgetown area.
