-I did not meet the man but heard his name often. I appreciate his sacrifice and service.
-Shel was a great supporter of the Acton Curling Club. That’s where I knew him from. But he knew my Dad from G’town hockey and anytime I would see Shel, he would tell me the best refereeing call he ever saw was one my Dad made way back at the Memorial Arena. And then we would recount the penalty to me.
- I worked with May at the Zellers Skillet many moons ago, she was an absolutely lovely lady with the kindest heart. She visited the hospital regularly to help the sick. What a couple, May and Shel. So good for the community, good people!!
-When Shell had the skate shop at Memorial...that's where you would find me, he teased me that I was the Mayor. We kinda shared the name Shell so were buddies. Such a kind funny gentleman, and May was so soft & sweet. They always stopped and chatted with you when you saw them. RIP May ❤️.

-Neil and I played hockey together for The Intermediate Raiders around 72-74. He is a true gentleman, fine teacher and a defence partner anyone would want when the fights break out. Students would not mess around with Mr Cotton.

-That man was one of the best parts of G.D.H.S. he was the only teacher that never asked me what I was doing out front after the bell rang. He new after I was done he would see me in his class and was perfectly cool with it. Some teachers got it and some didn't.

- Neil took to Georgetown with a passion when he came to play hockey here, he was awesome to watch play hockey, started teaching at GDHS and was a well liked teacher and mentor for many, coached in minor hockey and high school Rebels, became a very important part of the Raider organization and saved the team when there was conflict and he pulled it back together Wendy has also given much to our community and she also played an important role with the Raiders. Neil turned to his love of music and is a popular entertainer and has written many songs. The Cottons of Georgetown awesome :)

We later found out that Mrs Pries know exactly wht we did. She had left the Hot Dogs for us and had already counted them and the pop in shortage. What a wise and wonderful lady :)

During the night 16/17 April 1945 a strong enemy force consisting of approximately one thousand men supported by self-propelled guns attacked the town of Otterloo, Holland. The Irish Regiment of Canada was responsible for defending this town which was a key point in the main axis of advance of 5 Canadian Armoured Division and the location of Divisional Headquarters. The enemy succeeded in infiltrating into the town and bitter fighting continued throughout the entire night.
By 0600 hours approximately 300 of the enemy had succeeded in infiltrating into a vital sector and were securely dug-in along the verges of the narrow road. Corporal Asseltine, commanding a section of three flame-throwing carriers Wasps) was ordered to clear this vital sector. When the section, with Corporal Asseltine in the leading carrier, moved onto the road, it immediately came under intense small arms fire from three sides at point blank range, in many instances as close as four of five yards. Disregarding the enemy fire this gallant Non-Commissioned Officer, with great coolness, directed the work of his section and opened fire with his flame-thrower, spraying ditches and slit trenches on both sides of the road. A concealed Bazooka position opened up at approximately 30 yards range and the second carrier was put out of action. Corporal Asseltine immediately rushed the position and with one burst from his Bren Gun killed the crew. Visibility was limited by fog to fifty yards but this Non-Commissioned Officer advanced up the road a distance of three hundred yards until his fuel was exhausted and then continued his advance firing small arms until this vital sector was cleared of the enemy. He then turned around, picked up the crew of the carrier which had been put out of action, and returned to his headquarters to re-fuel.
As a result of this Non-Commissioned Officer’s magnificent leadership and courage seventy of the enemy were killed, many wounded and he remainder so demoralized that the tactical picture was completely changed and the town was quickly cleared of the enemy.

- My husband and brother-in-law grew up with "Perky" in their lives as did our two sons Andy and Rooster - he was either at the Ball Diamond or at the arena! Many wonderful memories of this man - doing whatever he could to better sports in our community! -Great talent. He used to give me a bit of a lecture though. “Bring the shoes in before they get like this. Don’t walk on them that way.”

-took the Raider's Skates there after practice to be picked up for game day, he knew every player likes and dislikes on their sharping. He knew them by their skates I did not even need to tell him :) He was awesome, great shoe repairs also :)
-Yes, I remember him! He put new heels on our shoes, and "clickers" on the heels so they didn't wear down. I can remember the leather smell of his shop, and that he was a nice man.

- I grew up in town and my parents always took our shoes to him
I always went with my dad cause yr grandad was so nice and when I grew up I often stopped in to just say hi. He was loved and respected by many. Yr grandmother as well. They told us wonderful stories and even taught us a lot.😍

- I still remember the smell of the shop. Spent many hours watching Grandad work. Sometimes he would give me a coin or two to spend on Penny Candy at Joe's Tuck Shop next door.
-and remember spotting the coins that fell into the air vent on the floor. 😊
Plus, we always had good skates.
- oh yeah!! I was always good at finding money lol especially around the parking meters at Spring thaw.

-I switched from CCM Tacks first year Midget to Bauer Supremes and never wore anything but Bauer’s
- i forgot my skates once and i knew where Mr Sienko lived and he went with me to his shop and opened his store on a Sunday morn. so i could play that afternoon, he was a super supporter of the Raiders!
-he was such a fantastic person. Loved going into the store and talking with him.

-I had nothing but respect for Mr. Sienko. We took our shoes and skates to him, always. I remember him and his wife from church...Maple Avenue. And one night at his house I had my first taste of dandelion wine.....which I think he made.

-my mom has just clarified this story. It was made by a polish lady who lived on Windsor Road. She would visit grandad in the store to speak in polish.

-Mr Sienko's shop was the only place to get your skates sharpened properly. There was a rumour that the Leafs wanted him to work for them. He would scrape the blade across his finger nail to show you how sharp they were. Nice man!
-Wow! That goes back a ways. Yes to the skate sharpening and the shoes, he also did additional holes in your belts.... often had a little story to tell and was a great man!
-What a legacy -- there are probably thousands of us out there who have warm memories of this incredibly decent man !
-Janet's grandpa let us play shoe shop and skate shop in his shop -while he fixed the shoes we would try them on -hence all the shoes in my closet now -right Janet?
