- Ken's Lunch, when my grandparents owned it, they lived upstairs
- Used to go get teachers their lunch there when I was in norval school. Their son went there with me. Low ceilings I remember noticing as a kid. Nice people, if you went in the back kitchen she had to feed you, lol
- Knew them all very well, spent a lot of time hangin' out at Ken's Lunch as a kid growing up in Norval. Cheeseburgers and cokes a plenty!
- Is the building that housed this eatery still standing and if so where?
- I think he had a diner on the Main Street of Georgetown before going to Norval. It was near where Wigo’s was.
- i remember that too, Sandy. I guess that would be back in the 50’s.
- So many fond memories of Ken's Cafe on main st. He was so welcoming and kind to everyone. A great place to go and we enjoyed his French fries with a coke every time we went in. 💯💯🤗🤗 correction it was called the Georgetown Cafe'
- The building in Norval is still there. It was a flower shop for a while.
- Remember Mum & Dad taking us to Ken's on Main St. when we were kids. Walked across from Cadaro's Apts. Was a big outing for us.
-What a great picture of a wonderful family.
- John Lee nice pic must bring back some memories
-Kens on main, juke box middle of restaurant, coconut cream pies, first filtered cigarettes Matinees, Codaros across street manufactured chocolate treats.
- The Lee family made an important contribution to the Norval community. Great people.
Fond memories ! 😁
- Was it also the bus stop at one time. Remember them being good friends of Joe & Hat Gibbons.
- it was the local greyhound bus stop - you could get your tickets there !! Wow this picture is worth a thousand words and memories 🙂
- Grew up with them in Norval. Went to school with Jeany. Great family!!!
-Look at little John
- My Dad loved him and spent a lot of time there!!
- Wonderful Norval family so terrific to see this picture! John still looks great saw him last year at the Norval reunion!
- Yes I remember them from Norval but only the Dad and daughter. Got the bus from there.
- I was proud to work for KEN and PHIL AT THE Georgetown restaurant on main st when I was 12 years old washing dishes and waiting on tables, they were both fantastic guys, I will remember them for the rest of my life.
- Great picture! I have so many fond memories too!
- A beautiful family. I remember John, he was about 5 or 6 and he came to our table and asked my Dad if he wanted pork chops. He was a cute little fellow. 👍👍
- I remember Jean in High School 😊
-I remember Ken was a very well liked man in the Norval community. And he made a good hamburger too!!
-I was in the Lorne Scots with John Lee.
- I'll never forget our TQ course Pete, with the RHLI ...It was an honour to have served with the Lorne Scots (C Company of course)
- I knew the Lee's well. I went to school with John and Bobby. My grandparents owned the garage beside them and rented out cabins.

-Best, kindest incredibly talented most beloved teacher EVER
- yup I could not have said it better..... What an amazing teacher and person, he was always there for you and truly loved what he did.
- he was amazing
-To quote Harry " my name is Harry, Mr Hamilton was my father". Harry was a great teacher. Most of my siblings had Harry as a music teacher and he became a family friend.
- I was about to write this exact same thing! :) The best teacher I ever had.
-An incredible man and amazing teacher. One of THE BEST!
-Thanks heaps Harry.
- HARRY.......FABULOUS MUSIC TEACHER
- Great teacher, wonderful man.
- Who DIDNT LOVE HARRY lol❤️😘. I LOVED him and never took music!
-Absolutely wonderful man. Harry taught as you came across it because then it meant something and you understood. Great times. RIP
- My Favorite teacher!! Harry was the best music teacher ever!!
Many fun days in his music class.
- Best teacher in High School, I had Harry for 4 years of music and band, loved him❤️
- Harry was the best❤️ Music class and the school band. Great days.
- Probably the best teacher in GDHS who saw potential in kids and developed it. He gave me an 80 in music. VP marked it down to 70, said I didn’t deserve the higher mark as I wasn’t that smart. Nice encouragement back then.
-Harry Hamilton one of the most kind people I've ever known and one of the best teachers I've ever had! He inspired me and help grow my love of music
- One of the Good Guys for Sure!
- I never had him for music. But he was a great music teacher.
- you sadly missed out
- I knew him well. I didn’t take band in school.
- I did t take band. But Harry would let me use the piano in the music room
- always had his door open...the nicest guy in the school, and patient as the day is long. used to yell at us to stop playing because he hates music...but only about twice a week 🤣🤣🤣
- My favourite teacher in high school. Harry was the best! He always had a smile on his face.
- Incredible teacher. Harry was the best.
-Great Teacher
- Great teacher. One of my favourites
-Harry! <3 Kindness and patience PLUS. Thank you for teaching me how to play the drums. :)
- Loved Harry so much. Still doing music and playing in an orchestra. (Not on flute, though.)
- Fond memories of Mr.Hamilton🎶
- Great music teacher!
- Nicest teacher at GDHS. I only had him for one year (grade 12 Vocal music in 1971/72), but he sure made a positive impact.
- Loved Harry!!!
- He always called Mr "Dimples"
- Awesome teacher. He loved his job and he loved his students.
- Best teacher ever!
-Great music teacher! Wonderful and kind.
- BEST music teacher! He loved music and each and every student!
-The best , definitely one of my most favorite and memorable teachers.
- Fantastic teacher!!
-Amazing man. Fabulous teacher, mentor, friend. And a great musician in his day.
-just think he was in to big band music back in the day
- Harry kept my interest in music so much that I played in the concert and marching band at the University of Tampa. Great time.
- A great music teacher. He played with some of the big bands in his day. I was lucky enough to see him pick up his trumpet during one of our concerts with the band. Maybe 1975-1976. He inspired me to play better. I was in the concert band and jazz band. He was well liked by everyone in the music program.
-One of my favourite teachers!
- Sweetest teacher EVER!
-Awesome teacher
Spent alot of spares and afternoons talking with him
- Loved him !! 💕
-Harry was an amazing man and great teacher! Best teacher ever!!!
-An amazing teacher and a very special gentleman. I remember him telling me to go for my dreams and forget the critics. He told the story of being given an aptitude test when he joined the Air Force, he apparently did not have an aptitude for music......just shows you how wrong these tests can be. He also played the vibraphone, an electric xylophone. He had many great stories and always had time to listen to yours.
- Loved him like a second dad/grandpa and buddy. I went pro because of his influence. So thankful we got to go on some outings to the ROM and other sites before he passed. My kids got to spend time with him when they were little.❤️❤️❤️🙏
- you are an amazing musician, partly because of harry.
- Had Harry for Grade 12 music... Only 6 students...Gig Hillock, Chris Todd, Rob Puckering, Teenie Harmeyer another girl and myself!! Harry let us guys just jam for the whole year!! Was a great teacher...One if my favourites!!!
- He is the Man who inspired my Love of Music so much, the Best Teacher and Mentor a young person could have!!
- Amazing man! Have thought of him many times.
- Was so thankful for music class as it was Harry Hamilton who made going to school enjoyable. He was an amazing teacher a kind and gentle soul. Had it not been for music and band I would not have been introduced to the greatest horn sound of "Chicago" which is still my all time favourite. I always heard big band music from my parents but not until GDHS and Harry Hamilton did I really appreciate the exquisite sounds, love and appreciation of all great music. Thanks Harry, I'll always be thankful of knowing and learning from the absolute best!!
- Best teacher!
-Playing the trombone in class, there were always long stretches of time in much of the music we played where there was nothing for me to play - like a 32 bar rest. I found this boring.
So having a background in music theory, I usually just figured out what was happening in the song, and would improvise something that fit. Not quite jazz, but kind of the same idea.
Whenever I did this, I would look up at Harry to see if he was noticing. Without fail, every time, he would already be looking straight at me, and would give me a little smile. He knew exactly what I was doing, and he knew that I knew that he knew what I was doing. That was his way of saying "I get it, go ahead, jam on, have fun."
What a teacher.
- great story of Harry and you
-I remember Harry and loved him
- Best music teacher ever
- Is this Mr Hamilton the music 🎶 teacher from GDHS?
- yes and he was very Loved
-now I remember- I tried trumpet and trombone- Not very good but had fun in the band and loved Mr Hamilton
- Such a wonderful man. Excellent teacher. Definitely a favourite!🎶🎷🎸🎺🎼
-Many find memories of him. He made it my favorite class, even lunch breaks to chat with him. Awesome man.
- He was a great teacher!!
- “ doll face” and Pinky
-Harry Passed in 2002
- Such a nice teacher, one of my favourites!
-He was so sweet

-Its a carding Machine for Beaumont Mills In the Glen.. these 2 were the owners
-"Carding is the process of raw materials to prepare them for Yarn"
- Really interesting
- Raw wool is fed onto a series of rollers to make the fibres long, Fibres are straightened out when they come off the rollers and are in the form like cotton batting. The large drum will then process the "batting" and turn it into soft yarn. Yarn is then twisted to give it strength..Thank god Gordie Preston gave really good Descriptions on his pictures
-They wear a great pair like them both
-The current owner of the mill was kind enough to give a tour once of his home part of the mill which does have some other interesting relics from the days of the yarn mill.
- Gord Graham. I remember him well...a lovely man
- I worked for Sam's son Doug for a few years. Nice guy.
-I washed socks there for a while, I still can't separate the colours from the whites. I ruined a whole batch because I mixed red socks with white socks and they came out pink. Man was Sam ever pissed at me, but nobody told me to separate them.
-Doug got his hand caught in that machine when he was 15 still has the scars and one finger that is half the size of a normal finger
- Ouch!
- Sam Penrice was my Grandpa. We actually lived in the Beaumont Mill back in the 80’s our new house wasn’t ready and we needed a place to stay for 6 months!!!
- Often wondered how many were employed there they had lots of sewing machines
-We were just talking about Gord and Sam the other day. Gord Graham was June Cook and Marie Beaumont brother. Uncle to Myrna Cook.
-Myrna & I use to stamp socks in her Grandma Graham’s garage during the summer. The socks were 2nds, (slightly flawed) & of course we made a little money. We then went door to door (only people we knew) selling them. People absolutely loved them. That was a long time ago during the good old days. Lol
- My Dads best friend and my Godfather—loved him ❤️
- I worked for both of them . My first job. Very nice people . Had a lot of fun there.
- I also worked for them. My first job as well. We did have a lot of fun there. And we were treated very well as employees.

-Very good man
- He was the Mayor of Georgetown at one time too l believe!
- 1955 Bandleader of the Modernairs at the Rose Room above old arena.
- really, I had no idea. Cool
- Wonderful gentleman - sold us our insurance policies on the boys when they were born.....always have dealt with the family for Insurance purposes.
- What a wonderful man he was, there are just no words to describe him adequately. My mother worked for him for years and thought the world of him. He was also our neighbour and I will always remember how kind both he and wife Edna were.
- I remember Mr Armstrong doing readings at St. George's Church I worked with Mona and Armstrong Insurance for little over 25 years, but he had passed away before I started working there.
-He was my parents and my insurance man
- My family home on Orchard blvd backed on to the Armstrong's yard. I can remember Mr. Armstrong playing his trumpet out the upstairs bathroom window, likely so he would not drive the rest of the family crazy. Nice man, never remember him not wearing a dress shirt and tie.
-One of Georgetown’s finest citizens. A great mayor for many years. He owned and operated Armstrong Insurance Company. He ran the company with honesty and integrity. Paul and his wife Janet have successfully taken over the business and have continue to to serve Georgetown with the ethics of his late father. Definitely one of the best...
-my sister and I now represent the third generation and our daughters have also joined the firm. Thank you for your kind words.
-Armstrong’s is definitely in good hands for many more years. Mandy, your grandfather would be proud of the entire family...
- I’m still a client
- Nice family, he was one of my brother and my newspaper delivery for many years when we were kids.
- Yes he was. And a good one
-Parkview neighbour and insurance buddy of Dad's. I remember he and Edna fondly. She always gave me a large order when I sold Regal Cards as a teen. Dad started me in the selling business early!
- Mr. Armstrong was a wonderful gentleman and former mayor of Georgetown. I remember him fondly as having a great personality and smile. The whole Armstrong family were outstanding citizens.
- I believe Mike and Paul Armstrong were twins. My brother Bob Carey went to school with them.
-the twins just celebrated their 80th birthday in July. 😁
- wow that brought memories for me
- Good man.
-They use to live on Ontario St up the street from where I lived many years ago great family
-Great man and great family!
- Living on Ontario St. With John , Edna and family was a real joy.
-Looking back we sure had alot of great people in our lives. Surrounded by some amazing example setters, honest, trust worthy
- Great to see great relatives in good spots Was the mayor at one time
- John T Armstrong one of the finest men you will ever know, a pillar in this community and his family still carries on the fine tradition. He was one of the reasons that Georgetown is a great community have outstanding folks like him to build it :)
- I’ll never forget the night Walker got the emergency call about an accident, having no idea it was Peter. Don’t think they ever quite got over it. So sad.
-My grandparents (Willetts) lived on Ontario St as well, just 1 or 2 houses up from Armstrongs. Apparently they were one of the first ones to have a telephone and when my Dad was stationed at Camp Borden before he went overseas, he would call home via the Armstrongs phone and Mike or Paul would be sent up to get Mom.
- they had to have a phone because Grandpa ran the original insurance agency from home before he moved to Main Street. I still have a book of matches with the original phone number. 😃
- That’s my son’s great grandfather.

- happy days and memories of gold.
- I remember Jack. He was often at Gudgeons. My next door neighbors. They sold the same life insurance. His daughter Jill is part of our hockey get together every fall for The Guelph Storm hockey game and Owen Sound Attack.

-A tragic loss too soon.
-Talented, handsome, polite young man who was Ernie's cousin. Loved talking and playing with him at the family reunions <3 Tragic loss to family, friends and the OHL.
- Paul was one of Ray’s best friends. They lived together in Peterborough when they played for the Pete’s. Such a great guy and a tragic loss. ❣️
-Paul was a good hockey player and a great guy....
- Such talent amongst such sadness. Jersey retired & picture in Guelph with the Storm. RIP
- I see a banner hanging from the rafters at the Sleeman Centre. Home of the Guelph Storm. I look at it every game. I don't think I knew Paul but am happy there is a banner. He will never be forgotten.
-There is also a wall with his pic and story - and every section of the arena is numbered and famous hockey players are listed on the support beam - we are in section 118 - dedicated to Paul. He will never be forgotten in Guelph
- almost anywhere in the sleeman centre there is a picture of Paul.
- My Cousin Paul, one of the “Greats”
- So sad to lose such a great guy , so tragically. Rest well Paul 💙
-Great young man , taken way to soon !
- When I played with Paul, even at a young age, I knew Paul was bound for the NHL. What tragic out come.
-I will never forget that day xo
- My parents, who lived in Guelph, were at the game when this tragedy happened. Such a sad day! May Paul be resting in peace. I know so many of his relatives and send my thoughts out to them.

- A great example of Georgetown youths. Very talented fellow. Gone far to soon.
- Paul was the all round CANADIAN BOY Handsome, Talented, Polite & Mannerly, Clever and great Build, he was a good one, RIP cuz, gone but will never be forgotten <3
-Paul was such a sweetheart. What happened to him was so unbelievably tragic. A large banner hangs above the ice surface at the Sleeman Center in memory of Paul. I look at it often, feel a sadness but smile.
-, I hope it is not insensitive to ask but how and when did he pass away?
- Paul Fendley (b. 1953 in Georgetown, Ontario; d. May 8, 1972 in Kitchener, Ontario) was a junior hockey forward and National Hockey League prospect who died in an infamous on-ice incident during the 1972 Centennial Cup.
CareerEdit
Over the course of his junior years, Fendley played with the Peterborough Petes of what is now known as the Ontario Hockey League as well as the Guelph CMC's which are now known as the Owen Sound Attack.
Paul Fendley of Georgetown, Ontario was a member of the 1971-72 Guelph CMC's who died as a result of an on ice accident at Guelph Memorial Gardens during Guelph's Centennial Cup 1972 victory. The 19 year old player died at Kitchener-Waterloo General Hospital on May 8, 1972, seventy-three hours after striking his head on the arena ice.
Fendley was checked by an opponent with 11 minutes to play in the game. He tried to catch his balance while still handling the puck and lost his helmet in the process, falling and striking the bare back of his head on the ice.
Fendley was the 1972 SOJHL Leading Scorer with 20 goals and 24 assists in 43 games. He also scored 14 goals and 18 assists in 26 playoff games before his accident. The game in which he was fatally injured was the final and clinching game of the Centennial Cup. His number has not been issued to a player since, by the Guelph CMC's, Guelph Platers, or Guelph Storm.

-remember that night so well. Ray and I were in total shock. Listened to updates on the radio all night. Just a terrible time. We loved Paul.❣️
- not insensitive at all and thank you Yvonne Smith-Few for the awesome article in reply :)
- Damn......that is certainly tragic.....at 19 years of age with so much going for him and from reading all of the comments a really good guy......terrible.......
- he really was that good a player and an all around great guy...but so was the whole Family.
-Thanks very much for that!
-Been to many Guelph Storm games, have seen Paul’s picture in the Hall at the back of Guelph’s Downtown Quebec Street Mall where it leads to the Sleeman Centre, a very tragic story.
- they have moved that picture to the main level of the arena, not too far from the restaurant entrance.
-my mobility has been bad, my husband has gone to games more recently. I did not know it was moved. Thank you. I used to work next door to it.
- My old next door neighbour. Paul took the time to teach me how to skate on the Credit River. A man poised for NHL supremacy - taken too soon. I wont forget what you did for me Paul.
- I will never forget that sad day when he left us.
- I remember watching many a game with Paul’s Mother, Phoebe, Rays Mother, Glad & usually Vicky. What fun times we had. Watching Ray & Paul play together was something else. Such good kids. Paul’s death was devastating to all who knew him.
-Paul was a really nice guy...what a tragedy . I don't think that Georgetown will ever forget him.
- I remember it well, growing up in Norval and hanging out the Ray Fendley
- I remember Phoebe, Paul & Tom - they were neighbours of my grandparents - all very nice friendly people. Didn't see him play much as I was only 12 or 13 when he had the tragic incident but I do remember my family, and all of G'town talking about it. RIP Paul Fendley, such a sad ending to a great future for him & the family.
- My brother Doug Unsworth played with him, I remember when he passed such a shock.
- Paul was my second cousin. I remember the day of his accident. What a shame !! Paul was such a handsome young man, he had so much to look forward to. R.I.P. Paul 😘
-A great all round Canadian boy. I am proud to say I grew up and was a friend . They didn't come any better than Paul. RIP Paul💔💖
-One of Georgetown’s best hockey players in my opinion. I was at Paul’s final game. The team played great. I miss him and think of him often. RIP Paul
-If you grew up in Georgetown during the 60’s & 70’s you may have known Paul Fendley. On May 5, 1972 Paul was playing in the All Canadian Jr “A” Championship Final game. With eleven minutes remaining in the game Paul was checked, he fell to the ice striking his head. He never regained consciousness and passed away May 8, 1972. Paul was nineteen years of age. Paul had been identified by the NHL scouts to be drafted in the June 1972 NHL entry draft. We will never know ?
Hockey is still one of the greatest games on earth. Play safe ! Show respect for your opponents !
I want to thank all of you who have shared all your kind thoughts and memories of Paul. I have many, many proud memories. Paul was a talented - hockey player, softball pitcher, high school wrestler, and golfer. Paul was an all around special guy. Paul was my big brother, my roll model and my best friend !
We will never forget.
- my 2nd cousin ,great guy RIP Paul , gone too soon
-I remember Paul and that tragic day I also had a crush on him. Gone way to soon
- I remember that day like it was yesterday. At Guelph Memorial Gardens. 🙏
- Classmate and teammate....with a solid personality
- I was also a classmate. Always nice to be around him.
- I was at that game as we had just moved from Georgetown to Guelph the year before. It was awful!!
- We always speak of Paul as it was one of the saddest things to ever happen to such a well respected young man. Gone but not forgotten. RIP 🙏🏼🙏🏼
- He was always such a nice guy, & in my recollection always polite to everyone.
-I was at the game with my dad mom grandfather broke my dads heart 💜 this tragic

-Unco Joe and Aunt Hattie...too many stories to tell
- Early 60's...I'd be about 6 or 7..I remember walking into Joe's office and the secretary stopped me and said " you cant go in there little boy" ...Mayor Gibbons says its ok...and I said Hi Unco Joe.
- Love this. I knew The Gibbons and knew the Lee Family were very close. I grew up with Jeanie in Norval. Both Families were very well liked.
- Hattie and Jeanie were very close. I still remember them walking arm-in-arm down Main Street. They were always together. Fond memories.

-Enjoyed walking into his office without fear..good sense of humour.. gave me a trophy and asked if I could fit a pigs head in it #aprilfools78pigsheadingirlswashroom
- was Mark Perego in on that?
-100%
- That pigs head in the ladies toilet....that was YOU Mitch?????
- yup
- I remember hearing about the pigs head .. lol
- We all heard about the pigs head before going to GDHS. Legend!
- The best Principal I ever worked with.
- Great leader. Was always there following the Rebel teams. Helped me get into Western when my marks were not so good.
- One of Dad's best friends at GDHS. Always spoke highly of Mike.
- Iron Mike....
- I remember him well.
- Only had him for 2 yrs as principal
- He was a great principal!
- I was starting Grade 10 when Mike Furlong came in as principal and he was definitely seen as a breath of fresh air. He was very positive (but firm!) and very much a "hands-on" leader. Many people don't understand how much influence a principal has on the overall morale and performance of a school, but if you compare schools with effective and ineffective principals, the difference is huge. Mr. Furlong was one of the best!
- I was there early 70’s
- Me too
- Such a good guy. He was a very fair principal
- Right through my High School years. 👍🏻. I remember the Vice Principal Mr. Robinson, Robertson? He was cool! Fair 👍🏻. I guess I never graduated up to the “Big” guy. 😆 But I knew he was there!
- I think Robinson was right.
-Good guy always took time for a chat, I remember being a consistent visitor. 😉 The VP of the time wasn’t as impressive 😶.
-there were 2 V.P.s one for surnames in the first part of the alphabet, one for the last part.
- The “short” answer is that I don’t want to stir the pot too much. I will stick with Mr. Furlong was a great guy . Beyond that I will admit to being a challenging negotiator for the unmentioned VP of the era. But most importantly how have you been ?
-He was either really tall or I was very short. He was cool
- He had a tough job, so many of us !!! He did really well !!!
- Was he the one with the Lotus Elan. I just remember watching this huge guy squeeze into this little car
- I'm pretty sure it was one of the vice-principals who owned the Lotus, although I can't recall his name right now. Presumably someone who didn't have any children!
- I think you are right. He was really tall. Didn’t drive as much as wore the car. I’ll think of his name around 3am
- Honestly a great guy.
Remember him giving me crap because I had a wallet full of get out of class notes with my forged late mother’s signature
- Quite an accomplished man. A WW II vet and a real leader in the field of education. Sadly, he passed only a year after retiring.
- oh wow, never knew he was a vet!
- i thought it was more like 3 weeks
-He was so great
- A fine man, did an awesome job :)
- Did I not hear about a story where some students kidnapped him as a prank?
- Mr. Furlong was the best had him as a teacher when we lived in Aurora
- Had a few run ins with him over the years but all in all a pretty good guy doing a tough job!! He would come to most of the wrestling matches as his son Mark was on our team!! He expelled me once by mistake but was gracious in his apology!!
-Probably NOT a mistake ! :)
- Excellent principal, very fair and even had a sense of humor
- Very welcoming when I went to see about returning to school as a young wife and mother.
-why can't i find an obit for mr furlong?
- I searched it too.. no luck, maybe because it was so long ago
- He passed in the summer of 1982
