with 4000 career wins, one being the Queen's Plate he retired from racing in 1989 but was a trainer for several years after, now 81
- wow I remember him on the racing program. I didn't realize it was that long ago he wasn't a jockey anymore
- His son was a fine person...if/when you could find him.in the crowd
- He rode a couple of horses for the brother-in-law Benny Lorriman! Good rider Hugo!!
- great photos of your Dad, Michelle is not on this page, we were at the Queen’s Plate when he won I think or did he also come in second once. We were with your sister, Janet Shepherd and her parents, they did well that day!
- Hello John, I don't think you were at the Queen's Plate that my Dad won, since that was in 1961. I shouldn't give my sister's age away but lets just say she was very, very young in 1961...lol. You were probably at another Queen's Plate since he was close to winning that many other times, but never did. He won the Prince of Wales steak race 5 times which is a record.
- I am thinking one of the times we went ( we used to go every year) he came in second or third and Mrs Shepherd bet on that
- One of my favourite people! We kept our horses with him at his home farm for years, and he was my mum’s race trainer at Woodbine for a very successful stretch in the early 2000’s! And not just your usual trainer...he was so hands-on with the horses, tending to them and getting up on them for exercise each morning. He knew them inside and out and was a fearless rider. Hustlin’ Hugo! Xoxo
-Remember him from Woodbine race track.Met a few of them thru a neighbour that was a vallet to the jockeys.
- this is the making of a fantastic Canadian action historian Oscar winning flick !!!
- Had Benaldon Stables with Al Pillutti and Ben Lorriman Hugo rode for us many times
-Worked with his sweet son for years. Everyone loved him... Marilyn
- Me too - I agree...great guy! :)
- my Dad worked at the track and loved that man best jockey ever
- Great neighbor fantastic trainer, we had some good times together.
- When I was assistant manager in Georgetown I sold Hugo some tiles and his wife carried out the heavy boxes
