John McCauley (1945 – June 3, 1989) was a Canadian hockey official who worked as a National Hockey League (NHL) Referee from 1966 to 1981.
McCauley was raised in Brampton, where he was a hockey goaltender and lacrosse player. In 1959, he won a Canadian Junior Lacrosse championship as a member of the Brampton Excelsiors.
During his career, McCauley officiated 442 regular season games and 12 playoff games. In 1979, McCauley was assaulted by a fan after a match between the NHL All-Stars and the Soviet Union and sustained a serious injury to his right eye. Although he returned to refereeing, McCauley's depth perception was never the same and he retired from refereeing two years later.
After being appointed assistant director of officiating in June 1979, McCauley worked as the director of officiating from 1986 until his death in 1989. John died at age 44 after complications from an emergency gall bladder surgery.
Irene McCauley - Among her many accomplishments in 26 years as trustee was a successful campaign to establish a Catholic high school in Halton Hills. That goal was reached when Christ the King in Georgetown opened in 2002. Another proud moment for McCauley came when Christ the King renamed its Theatre for Performing Arts after her. McCauley was also the HCDSB's first female vice-chair and was elected chair in the 1980s, as well as serving on several committees.
In 1980, McCauley was approached by Father Devent and Father Wood of Holy Cross Catholic Church about becoming the municipality's trustee for the Halton Catholic board, beginning a community-service career that would see her become the longest-serving elected official in Halton Hills.
Her community volunteering included work for organizations such as the United Way, Halton Hills Youth Action Committee, youth lacrosse, women's basketball and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind.
She was also dedicated to her Holy Cross parish, serving in several capacities, and was singled out for her work with the Bishop's Medal of Honour. Irene passed away in January 2010.

A defenceman during his playing career, McCauley became a referee after injury forced his retirement from playing in 1997. He refereed his first NHL regular season game in 2003 and became a full-time NHL referee in 2005. He has refereed nine out of the eleven Stanley Cup Finals (2013 - 2023), missing 2019 due to injury and 2021 due to a positive covid-19 test.
Wes was born on January 11, 1972, in Georgetown.
McCauley entered Michigan State University and played as a defenceman for the university's Spartans team. He spent four years playing alongside his best friend Bryan Smolinski and together they co-captained the team in their final year. McCauley won the inaugural Terry Flanagan Memorial Award at the end of his final season in 1993.
After his first year at Michigan State, McCauley was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the 8th round of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft. After graduating from university, he played minor league hockey He ended his playing career in 1997 due to injuries.
After retiring from playing, Wes followed in his father's footsteps by becoming a referee. He started off refereeing minor league matches in Ontario, before progressing to the ECHL. In 2001, he was hired by the NHL to officiate in the second-tier American Hockey League. While with the AHL, McCauley refereed his first NHL game on January 20, 2003, a 5–1 win to the Columbus Blue Jackets against the visiting Chicago Blackhawks. After being selected to officiate the AHL's Calder Cup Finals in 2004 and 2005 , he was promoted to a full-time NHL referee for the 2005–2006 season. After two seasons as a full-time NHL referee, McCauley refereed his first playoff match in the 2007 Stanley Cup Finals, in the first match of the conference quarterfinal series between the Buffalo Sabres and New York Islanders on April 12, 2007. In June 2013 he was selected as part of the officiating team for the NHL's 2013 Stanley Cup Finals between the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks, McCauley has subsequently officiated the Stanley Cup Finals in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020 and 2022. He currently wears uniform number 4. McCauley officiated his 1,000th NHL game on December 23, 2018. When coming to center ice after penalties or video reviews, he is known for his suspenseful announcements of important results.
McCauley is married with four children and lives in South Portland, Maine. His younger brother Blaine McCauley also played professional hockey. Wes was one of the referees in Blaine's professional debut in 2000.
Blaine McCauley played two seasons in Vernon with the 1994-95 Vernon Lakers and the 1995-96 Royal Bank Cup Champion Vernon Vipers. In 115 games with the Lakers & Vipers, McCauley collected (26-goals-79-assists-105-points). After four years at Lake Superior State University, McCauley went on to play two seasons in the ECHL and American Hockey League with the Dayton Bombers, Cleveland Barons and Syracuse Crunch from 2000-2002. McCauley was an assistant coach with the 2005-06 Ontario Junior Hockey League Georgetown Raiders & is now the head coach/gm of the NLL Arena Lacrosse League Toronto Monarchs. McCauley was named coach of the year in 2018.
