The structure is masonry, and the exterior wall is limestone. The building stands on the site of the Bennet House Hotel which operated in Georgetown since 1863. The present building known to Georgetown residents as "The Old Bank" was erected in 1918 by The Merchant's Bank of Canada which later became the Bank of Montreal. The bank occupied the building until it was forced to close in 1943 under war regulations. The property was used by the Town Council as municipal offices. It was purchased by the Royal Bank in 1947, The Royal Bank took possession from the Town of Georgetown on March 1, 1947.
and housed the Georgetown branch until 1973 when the bank relocated across the street. It is now home to the Coldwell Banker Fieldstone Realty and Cellar restaurant on the lower level where you may be seated in the original bank vault room.
