-Enjoyed walking into his office without fear..good sense of humour.. gave me a trophy and asked if I could fit a pigs head in it #aprilfools78pigsheadingirlswashroom
- was Mark Perego in on that?
-100%
- That pigs head in the ladies toilet....that was YOU Mitch?????
- yup
- I remember hearing about the pigs head .. lol
- We all heard about the pigs head before going to GDHS. Legend!
- The best Principal I ever worked with.
- Great leader. Was always there following the Rebel teams. Helped me get into Western when my marks were not so good.
- One of Dad's best friends at GDHS. Always spoke highly of Mike.
- Iron Mike....
- I remember him well.
- Only had him for 2 yrs as principal
- He was a great principal!
- I was starting Grade 10 when Mike Furlong came in as principal and he was definitely seen as a breath of fresh air. He was very positive (but firm!) and very much a "hands-on" leader. Many people don't understand how much influence a principal has on the overall morale and performance of a school, but if you compare schools with effective and ineffective principals, the difference is huge. Mr. Furlong was one of the best!
- I was there early 70’s
- Me too
- Such a good guy. He was a very fair principal
- Right through my High School years. 👍🏻. I remember the Vice Principal Mr. Robinson, Robertson? He was cool! Fair 👍🏻. I guess I never graduated up to the “Big” guy. 😆 But I knew he was there!
- I think Robinson was right.
-Good guy always took time for a chat, I remember being a consistent visitor. 😉 The VP of the time wasn’t as impressive 😶.
-there were 2 V.P.s one for surnames in the first part of the alphabet, one for the last part.
- The “short” answer is that I don’t want to stir the pot too much. I will stick with Mr. Furlong was a great guy . Beyond that I will admit to being a challenging negotiator for the unmentioned VP of the era. But most importantly how have you been ?
-He was either really tall or I was very short. He was cool
- He had a tough job, so many of us !!! He did really well !!!
- Was he the one with the Lotus Elan. I just remember watching this huge guy squeeze into this little car
- I'm pretty sure it was one of the vice-principals who owned the Lotus, although I can't recall his name right now. Presumably someone who didn't have any children!
- I think you are right. He was really tall. Didn’t drive as much as wore the car. I’ll think of his name around 3am
- Honestly a great guy.
Remember him giving me crap because I had a wallet full of get out of class notes with my forged late mother’s signature
- Quite an accomplished man. A WW II vet and a real leader in the field of education. Sadly, he passed only a year after retiring.
- oh wow, never knew he was a vet!
- i thought it was more like 3 weeks
-He was so great
- A fine man, did an awesome job :)
- Did I not hear about a story where some students kidnapped him as a prank?
- Mr. Furlong was the best had him as a teacher when we lived in Aurora
- Had a few run ins with him over the years but all in all a pretty good guy doing a tough job!! He would come to most of the wrestling matches as his son Mark was on our team!! He expelled me once by mistake but was gracious in his apology!!
-Probably NOT a mistake ! :)
- Excellent principal, very fair and even had a sense of humor
- Very welcoming when I went to see about returning to school as a young wife and mother.
-why can't i find an obit for mr furlong?
- I searched it too.. no luck, maybe because it was so long ago
- He passed in the summer of 1982
