-Thx for the share, makes me a little home sick
-I always thought of it as the new Catholic church - it's hard to believe it's gone.
-I miss it so much, that I avoid Maple Ave at all costs when I am in town. What a sad waste.
-This is our wedding and sure will miss memories of that special day for our anniversary, July 22 1967
-I remember sitting in class at Holy Cross school, watching them put up the huge wooden roof trusses...
-I drove by the site yesterday and thinking about my in-laws, Cliff and Sylvia Glaude. They were such a big part of that church.. Made me miss them even more.. Thanks for sharing..think I'll save this picture
-Married there. June 1986.
-Still have my First Communion photos, 50 some years ago.
-So what year what's that church built? Maybe 1965. Does anyone remember?
-2 of my grandchildren were baptized there. Beautiful building!
-Built in 1965 my husband family went to church there and I was married there in Oct 7
-I remember when it was being built the mid 60s.
-Married there
-Married there,,, and had our 3 kids baptized there,, truly a-shame
-do you remember father octer and father zeno?
-I thought his name was Father Otger (not sure about the spelling), but it's been a long time ...
-it probably was Otger, i never pronounced it right
-Rare piece of Mid-Century Modern architecture that should have been designated and repurposed. Bet it took up a lot of room in the landfill!
Sacre Couer (formerly Holy Cross) is headed for the same place, likely to make room for more condos.
- Was married there. My daughter baptized there also
-According to the Holy Cross Website .. construction began in March 1964 and it was Officially opened in March 1965
-So many memories. I had my confirmation there, was married there, and my son was baptized there.
-it's the Gtwn way: "Oh well, we have our memories."
-Very little "Mid Century" in Gtwn. The McNally House on the corner of Market and Maple, also Yo-Yo with the "bat wing" roof. Not every heritage treasure is from the 19th Century!
IMO we need to save one or two good examples of each style.
-I remember the Saturday afternoon movies with pink popcorn. Married there May 1st 82.
-I used to help Mr. Boyle, the church custodian, set up the chairs for the Saturday afternoon matinee, and he'd let me in for free and even sneak me a pop and popcorn for the show :0
-Married July 28, 2001, baptized our son and his first communion! I miss this church.
-So.many memories both happy and sad. Hard to believe it is gone.
-I remember going to see Bambi in the basement of this church with my brother
-i remember going to see bambi too, i cant remember if we had to sit on the floor, or if there was chairs
-There were chairs and they had popcorn in little bags and you could buy a can of pop. Someone ahead of us threw their empty can backwards over their head and I got it in the face lol
-Not funny then but when you have a room full of kids in a basement in the dark, stuff will happen
-i was baptized there, married there and all 3 of my kids were baptized as well.. little emotional seeing this pic..
-so sad it was demolished
-Used to love sitting in the overflow area, high above the alter, looking down at the congregation through the metal meshing, usually with pals as parents always sat in the pews!!!
-That overflow area was the choir loft
-remember the crying rooms lol
-Thank you for sharing. I have so many amazing memories in this church
-Sad it was demolished!
-Lots of memories, some bad, but mostly good.
-My mom used to play Bingo in the basement.
-.... i picked you up from the blood donor clinic here....
-I so miss the church I have great memories in their...
-Dart Banquets
-Hockey parties
-I remember watching The Three Stooges and old movies.I believe they did this to get the kids out of the house so the parents could have Sexy times at home.
-So much of my life is there. Baptism, 1st Communion, Confirmation, Cub Scouts, Squires and Knights Of Columbus Bingo nights. Bazzars., Weddings, My father's and sister's funerals were there. And Mr. Dressup performed there. Always remembered.
-i didnt mr. dressup was a catholic!
-I walked to high school behind Holy Cross almost daily and once lost my Oma's wedding ring that I had been given somewhere on the way. I was heartbroken over that. So sad they demolished it.
-.. For me it was the CYO ( Youth Club ) .. Dancing every Sunday Night .. A huge part of my Teen Years .. I wouldn't have had it any other way ... :)...
-My parents were married there. I was baptized there, First Communion & Confirmation were there.
-Went to the school and the church, so sad to see it go. hope they put something there for the kids.
-Nope.. Another seniors home.
-Their trying to get rid of the school too. Wonder what they will put there.
-why are they getting rid of the school too?
-Eventually they will build a new one. It's old.
-What is there now?
-Empty lot\
- yep... senior's apts going in there
-Actually I think it is a great location, the Main Street, the Park, the Hospital is fairly close by the Library, John Elliot, Cedarvale, even the Gellert Centre is not that far, the post office, many of the things they need
-Really. That's horrible the whole place should be gor the kids. There were some of the bed tobogganing hills.
-Just across the road from it is Cedarvale (billed as a great toboggan/sleigh run, with the little snow we had this years that would account for only a few days.. I do not think that hills leading to the school will be removed.
-I still thought it was a mid century jewel of a building. It's a shame
-It is one of my favourites both in and out and would have been awesome if it could have been saved and moved, I do not know if they could have found enough value to repurpose it, considering the value of that property
-Ahhhh "kneeling" memories
-I also remember kneeling for communion around the altar perimeter.
-I have not been in the new Holy Cross, but it looks good from the outside.
-I just remember when the old one was built we thought it was so modern and ahead of its time😀
-Imagine climbing that scaffold 65 feet up. I'd hate to get there and then realize I needed to go to the johnny...
-I will show these pics to my mom.Lots of memories for our. Family as well.my mom was a french teacher at holy Cross School
-Mme Clendening was my French teacher, and was wonderful.
-I miss the old church. They said it would be bigger which I don't really feel that it is and not only that it seems so cold without the warmth of the wood. It's a lot of stonework. I went a few times and haven't been back. Not only does the building feel cold to me but the parishioners (not all). It's sad to me.
