-anyone know who this is?
-Charlie Burns aged 81 at the time
-wow, do you know how far me made it?? I remember walking it a couple of times..I think it was around 30 miles??
-Remember how sore our feet got?
-oh ya!!
-Yes I remember (and the blisters) as well from Georgetown to south on Main Street in Brampton I think.
I did it once to Brampton only made it about half way .. think I was around 12 at the time.
-I have a not so good memory of the walk one year. It was routed through Streetsville. I was walking along beside a couple of friends down the main street, not paying attention and walked into a parking meter. Hit me direct in the jaw. Ow! I lost my motivation to continue ...LOL
-I do remember completing it two years ,something about going through Snelgrove on 17th side road rings a bell. Nuts 🚶🏼🚶🏼
-Ouch. .That would keep me away!
-Sure do .... I recall walking in the 1st one but only made it about 1/2 way, my feet where so sore & blistered .....ouch ! Thank heavens Ken came along & rescued me :)
-me too walked the first one lol DOn Jarvie bet $50,00 I would not make it to Norval..made it as far as Streetsville then had to quit cause my blisters broke after numerous change of socks etc from my Uncle Donnie who finally rescued me and took me home lol I think it took me a week to walk straight after that day lolol but loads of fun for everyone !!! BUT Don Jarvie paid up and man that felt good lolol awww the good ole days such great memories :) :)
-Brings back memories. I completed this run/walk back in '69 finishing first along with Ross Kingdom (Intentional tie). That year, Oxfam was routed thru Huttonville, Norval, Georgetown, Glen Williams, Alloa, Snelgrove and evntually back to Brampton. Made the front page in the local (Brampton) newspaper.
-I remember the walk, the blisters.......... but I finished
-I completed that walk as well, not too shabby for an 11 year old... ;)
-I did as well, can't remember the year just that I was still at Holy Cross, grade 7 maybe. It was my second attempt. First try not so successful lol
-i remember, i wasn't in it but i was riding my horse and joined in part of the walk...the Georgetown Harold reporter took our photo and the caption read " should a horse get paid twice the sponsorship because it has twice and many sore feet" we were never asked if we were part of that ride......Terri Spingola and I had a nice ride anyway...........when you pay board on a horse you have to ride when you can
-i was there
-Loved the Oxfam walk. We had so much fun as teenagers doing that walk.
-I made it the first two years and came home in an ambulance the third year.(heat exhaustion). Scared the s&@$ out of my parents.
-I remember the 30 mile walk....and that it wore out my shoes and made my friend's toes go black!
-I so remember doing this...loved it..I think I did it alone
-I think walked 69, started in Brampton to Hornby to Ashgrove to Georgetown to Huttonville and finished in Brampton. I think I walked a mile and ran a mile.
-I only made it as far as Huttonville before the blisters were so bad some woman took me into her home to dress them and then had her hubby drive me home.
-i did it several times and remember how sore and tired I was after
-Imagine, that wouldn't happen nowadays. It was a simpler time.
-Hey guys that is my husbands grandfather Charles Burns from 25 Mackenzie.,that was absolutely amazing to come across thank you for posting.
-Steve has told me he did complete the walk, plus received a bronze foot for being the oldest walker.
-I remember him well his family lived on our street. That is all he did was walk. I did the walk 3 times made it everytime.
-That's for sure Shelly ,and when it rained he walked 30 miles up and down the hall drove Barb crazy.
-Oh my God, that is my Granddad, he walked the Oxfam a lot through the years, sure do miss him.
-I was discussing this the other day with my husband. I remember walking it with my mom and aunt and all us kids. My uncle kept driving around picking up the younger kids as they got tired. Wow
-I remember doing that walk....started out thigh our history teacher Mr. Corning......he left us in the dust
