-we used to walk here all the time remember? It was so great exploring the land and the empty mill. ❤️
-...and the fish we got on piece of apple lol....
-omg yes!!!!!!
-We had bush party's there
-The river was 1/4 mile wide when the dam was holding back water to feed the mill pond. The phleum that fed the mill is under the parking lot where this was taken
-What is a phleum?
-The pipe that took the water into the mill.
-I can't find that word anywhere except as a name of a grass. Interesting.
-Another word is penstocks. If you were ever there you would have seen the concrete intake at the mill pond, which was the turtle pond, when we were kids.
-Richard l think I found the word as flume. Maybe alternate spelling.
-it is pronounced flume - you are correct.
-What a difference in appearance from our childhood even the bridge that we would cross seem to have disappeared
-Yeah - the traffic lanes were the first to go. Was it just a single car width? I remember if you were on it there was not much room and hopping up onto the side abutments was often what you did when cars would cross. And depending on the size of the vehicle, it shook.
-think a 1/4 mile wide would flood the entire area... the golf course had a lease to draw water till the late 90's or early 2000?... the CVCA would damm it each spring to raise the water level... and remove the timbers each fall .. think at it's widest here would be around 150'...
- I remember the footpath between the mill pond and the river was just wide enough for single file walking when we played there in the late 50's. Standing by the turtle pond looking at the other shore line it look real wide. You can see where the river once reached the banks and now its just a trickle compared to the days when the bridge and the dam was intact. We all were a lot shorter then too - lol!
-We used to jump off that bridge..
-Yes...exhilarating. I remember some of the high school seniors from the dive team would perform some hair standing on the back of your neck dives from the road deck! Stuff like from the up-current side of the road, wait until traffic cleared, run and swan dive over the rail on the dam side! 😯 Nuts! Myself...I'd jump, feet first.
-Ron and his pals went swimming there
-Ahh so many parties in the eighties, swimming jumping off the bridges, fishing on opening day for trout, hiking up to the clearing on the bruce .such great memories and no cells or ipads!!!!!!!! 😁 this area has got a piece of a lot of us was a great hang out, cheers to all
