-My dad Gord Bassett taught there for many years
-I had your Dad as a teacher. One of the best teachers I've ever had. :)
-Ha! Was just telling my buddy about having him as a teacher for grade 7 social science. God forbid you didn't underline in red pen....
-Mr Bassett was the best!
-Your dad was the epitome of what a great teacher should be.
-Great teacher, I had him as well 🙂
-Have to agree, he was a great teacher.
-I adored Mr Bassett! Possibly one of the best teachers I had. That school was great.
-Great teacher. I had him too.
-Everyone had Mr Bassett or at least heard him yelling in other classes lol he wasn't a bad teacher he just controlled the shitheads in his class
- ^^^Yes. Anyone out of line he used pure intimidation to break them. Now a days that wouldn't fly....
-Thank you for your wonderful comments about my dad.
-Had Gord Basset in grade 8, kept the problem kids, both boys and girls in line. Started from day one when all those getting into their desks from the wrong side got sent to the hall for a bit of a tune up LOL!
Loved this guy, great History Teacher!!

-I had Mr. Bassett for history in 69/70 and 70/71. Always looked forward to his classes, a great teacher alright!
-He was an amazing teacher, most kids never appreciated till much later how much he would influence their lives. Coming into Stewartown you where alway told that he was the teacher NOT to get - totally wrong!
He is the reason when my grade 8 daughter was going over a US map marking on the state capitals I was able to correct the ones she had wrong from memory.

-Great guy but he taught my 2 older sisters and 3 older brothers, I was doomed
-Him and I butted heads all the time because I just could never understand math. I remember him becoming so mad at a classmate he smashed the ruler off one of the desks and shards were flying all over the classroom! Grade 8 yearbooks came out and I made sure he was the FIRST person to sign my yearbook. At the end of signing it he wrote “practice your math!!”
He left a very strong imprint on me. I am still horrible at math but I constantly think of him when numbers come up!

-try being his daughter. In high school!
-I had Mr. Bassett for grade 8 history as well. I remember him taking the class on a field trip to a pioneer village of sorts - think maybe the Milton area? I remember him being a fair and reasonable teacher and committed to the success of his students. He demanded and had the respect of his class. To this day, I hear his name come up from time to time in conversation and that’s going back 50 years (ouch)!
-And ur mom was our Avon lady for many years!
-We were all terrified of him! But he was a great teacher ❤️1
-I loved your Dad as a neighbour and a teacher
-your Father was my grade 8 teacher, he was wonderful. Yes he did control the little shits that needed it, nothing out of the ordinary for the time. I heard he passed away, hugs to your family
-I was there for one year, Grade 8 1969-70, when I got caught in the middle of Park School transitioning from a K to Grade 8 to a K to Grade 6 school. I wasn't too happy about it at the time but overall it was a good experience.
-I loved SSPS... it was, academically, the best thing to happen for me.
-We loved the fact that you were there too..😘😘😎
-I had him as well great guy
-Mr. Bassett was the best!
-My brother had him as well. It was a great school then. Both my boys went there it is still a great school. Teachers past and present are awesome! Can't forget about Mr. Gardner, Mr. Denny either. Sorry can't remember all the teachers back then too early in the morning lol.
-Hated that School. Classes were way, way to big and i learned nothing
-Pretty sure you mean Centennial there 🤣🤣🤣
-There was a great bunch of teachers and friendships made there
-Lou Zander and the dreaded “hang five”... On the up side, that punishment is the reason I do binomial probability distributions so easily. 🤣
-Lou Zander and his skunk coat. He taught us to shoot craps.
-All the cool kids went to Stewarttown!
-This is soooo true... and the coolest ones were your friends!
-I can honestly brag to my kids that I walked uphill both ways to School in the snow.
-Oh ya👍
-Fact
-Very true! Lol
-It was a great school. Went there in 71 and 72. The only thing that bugged me was having to get the bus every day.
-Loved it as a grade school and even more as a senior public
-Great years Mr. Zander was cool and liked Mr. Basset who taught Larry, myself and my son Jason.
-I attended this school for 6-weeks! We moved to G'town in May of 1981... I was in 8th grade and didn't know anyone. I had fun for those 6-weeks! Then start GDHS (still really not knowing anyone!)
-I cut the christening ribbon for this school shortly after it opened. The principal was Rob Gibbons. Prior to this school i was in the 1 room school beside the church. Yes, i am as old as dirt, lol.
-All my sibs went to the one room
-What was your maiden name?
-Walker as in Bob, Bill, Judy, Lynda, Janet & me
-Mr Gibbons gave me a strap a dozen or more times as a kid.then I saw him when I was an adult I felt like saying try your luck now buddy.
-I can still remember the names of my teachers: Miss van de Valk - Home Room and Geography, Mr. Bassett - History, Mr. Lawrence - Industrial Arts, Mr. Steenburg (sp?) - Science, Mr. Pinkerton - ?, Mr. Gardiner - Math, Mrs. Rennick - English, Mrs. Brown - Music, and Mr. Brown - Phys Ed.
-Mr. Steinberg, Mr. Stankey, Miss Rudiger, Mr. Ogden, Mrs. Hearn, Miss Mackie, Mr. Zander, and the young English teacher who had us read comic books to learn Greek mythology. His name escapes me (?Thompson).
-There was also Mr. Ogden - science. I think it was Mr. Reed that was the principle and I think his name was Mr. Ridley was English and Mrs. Hearn was the gym teacher.
-I also remember that Mr. Zander and Mr. Gardiner had the split class and had the TV to watch the 72 Canada\Russia series.
-Some others not mentioned....Mr Petty- co and home room. Mr Brown - gym. Mrs or Ms Boyes - geography. Oh and the science teacher with dandruff....funny how I remember that.
-Great School, grade 7/8 back then in 73-75!!
-My three grandkids went to school there
-Hi everyone lifetime Georgetown boy went there 75 to 77 I'm pretty sure lol
-My mum (Audrey Leggett) was the school secretary there from the late 60s to the mid 70s. Two other teachers there were Mr Brown the gym teacher, hard but fair and his wife Mrs Brown the music teacher. Our school choir even cut a record one year we were there!
-I remember that record and your mum
-I remember that, my parents didn’t buy a copy but I wonder if anyone we know has a copy? Likely Dave McDonald whom I have come to think of as the Yoda of all things Georgetown, LOL.
-I would love a copy - what was the song?
-I think we did an entire album. It was our Christmas pageant.
-Okay I remember doing a choir record and the song was the one all the schools competed with. Shenandoah or something like that. My house bought it but who knows where it is now.
- ... ours was in 68 or 69, were you in school with us then?
-No 70/71
-I went to speyside in grade four from stewattown public school
-I lived in the village
-I have a copy! Rob Heaton did a soprano solo remember?
-I knew there was a solo but couldn’t remember who sang.
-Had the best grade seven teacher. Mrs Barranger
-I went there from 1995-1998. I don’t remember all the teachers I had but I remember for grade 6 I had Mrs. Evans, grade 7 I had Mr. Kennedy then Mrs. Buest when she came back from mat leave. Grade 8 I had Mr. Hughes. I remember him reading us the Old man by the sea. I remember my art teacher, Mr. Blake and how he always had sweet tarts. He once told me I was “unique” 😂 I forgot our librarian’s name (Mrs. Davidson?) but she liked leather pants. Mr. Denny, Mr. Reid....Mr. Walker throwing music stands when we couldn’t hit a note 😂
-I painted a ceiling tile with Jen Landry....I think it’s still up. Loved that school.

-Me too... just 30 years sooner, LOL
-Mrs Grieves was the library teacher! I still see her around on the ski hill! Mr Blake was a tad creepy but everyone liked him...candy will do that....
Mmm Mr Hughes...that is all. ☺️
Mr. Basset was a bad *** math teacher....smashing rulers on desks. R.I.P.

-Stewarttown was some of the best days of my LIFE!!!!

-that’s right!!! Mrs. Grieves! Hahaha.
-I pulled the wool over her eyes a few times with assignments...I couldn’t ever forget her name!
-I also remember our VP...forgot his name, making fun of Canadian accents hahahaha (he was from Indiana?)
-hmmmm I kiiiinda remember him but also can’t remember his name. 😂
-Mr. O’Driscoll?
-oh YEA that’s the guy who would always use his ruler as a golf club and would stand in the hall dusting up on his shot!
-yeah!
-Mr. Ogden was my favourite .
-Loved Mr Ogden
-Spent grades 1-4 and 7-8 there and had Mr. Basset as a teacher. Oh, and yes Thomsy all the cool kids went to Stewarttown.
-I remember you and your brother donny...he used to bring coffee in a thermos at ten yrs old
-I remember you and Mr Brown Mr Bassett and me Mackie
-Mr. Dave Lawrence shop teacher would send me out the back door to go and get cookies from the girls home ec. class next door!
-Lol I remember that Ma Mackie's home ec class
-He taught me how to solder, when I complained that it was unfair that girls couldn’t take shop. He arranged a swap class where the boys took a class with Miss Mackie and we took shop for a class.
-Cool I never did that but I do remember both of them well
-Mr Lawrence is still around. See him almost every year at the campground we go to on Labour Day Weekend
-ya , used to live out by Scotch Block, retired as head of GDHS shops.
-was talking to him last winter. trying to get together to go snowmobiling! if the trails open maybe this winter!
-That would be him
-"Maybe we're all just a little insane"
-Thanks for a platform for me to claim to be the last kid to bring his pony to school more than once from concession 8..also the longest standing in the hall student and most surely the most strapped student
-By the way how is a kid to learn anything if you put him out in the hall for hours day after day.....hey teacher leave those kids alone all in all you are just another brick in the wall
-It was a 4 room school when I was there
-Grades 2 and 3 Mrs McKeown grades 4and 5 Mrs McKelvey
-I remember that
-Mrs McKeon was the nicest teacher I ever had.
-Grade 8 Mr. Gibbons. Mr Bassonette Grade 6 I think, Grade 7 Mr. Saunders. 1962 to 1965
-Mrs. HEARNS G1 MRS. MCKeown G2 Miss Whittnee C3 Miss Boys G4
-Connie Baumhalt do you have 33 nuts in a shell our class magazine from grade 6
-81-82 loved that school Mr Ridley
-Mr Ridley passed away about 10 or12 years ago.
-He was the Gym teacher right? Had a spinal surgery like a rod in his back or something? If it's the same guy, he was a good man, taught me football. When I was teaching my kids 'flea-flickers, and button hooks' his lessons flooded my mind. This fellow and Mr. Ogden (math) (also a woman who taught home economics/English?) were the only competent teachers imho.
-I had Mr Cosgrove for  home room in grade 8 .He was good.
-I want to say I attended 1983 and '84. Grade 7 and 8 when it was a middle school.
-I think Mr. Ridley was a part time scout for the BlueJays during their 1st yrs...
-yes he was and used to tell us great stories as well as an awesome gym teacher
-He was a great guy, and seemed to have the 'inside' story on a lot of topics. I haven't thought of him for decades, but the news of his passing kinda bothered me. He was the rare type of teacher who genuinely cared about his job, and us kids, and imparting knowledge onto us. A really nice guy, I count myself fortunate to have had him as a teacher. RIP Mr. Ridley. 😥
-he sure was special - he really cared for us little monsters
-8G - homeroom - Mr.Basset 😁
-Me to 74-75
-Mr Basset oh the trouble I seemed to find when he was watching lol
-Yes all these great Teachers we all loved them I'm sure they all loved us as well. Still my favourite school.
-I so remember......they made me do track and field
-I liked Ridley for gym class
-77 78 for me.
-I started grade one in Stewarttown school the first year it opened
-I went to school in Stewarttown in the 60s I remember Miss Whitmee, and my grandfather went to the old one room school which turn into Briggs Upholstery shop
-Our farm was right next door My Dad sold the property to the school board for the school to be built
-Did he have that gorgeous Clydesdale?
-No my Father had a small Dairy Farm and the Allis Chalmers dealership it was called Reid Equipment and Supplies
-We lived in the old Lawson house across the creek from the mill!!
-Jim Ridley was my favorite teacher of all time. McDonald and Bassett were Bullies that abused there power. Complete douches
-Had both Ridley and Bassett. Correct assessment. Fond memories for sure
-I just want to point out that Mr. Bassett’s daughter is on here and he passed away fairly recently (from my memory) let’s try to be more sensitive about that. 🙂
-Mr Gardiner was pretty much the same.
-Anyone remember the doogy shake
-I do...The only human being who walked around town at a 45 degree forward slant. I spent a lot (like too much) time in his office. He once threatened me with the strap...and he produced it! He meant it!
-Mr McDonald passed away this past year as well.
-I'm sorry to learn of his passing, but recall laughing my ass off when one of us kids got stuck knee deep in the spring mud pit near the wood lot, and Mr. MacDonald (aka Doogie) had to go in to rescue the kid. Hilarious, planks of wood which sank, became slippery and in the muck he went, both feet shin deep! The kid lost his boot (it came off as Doogie was pulling him out) He (MacDonald) was so frustrated, it was awesome! Hahahaaha. I swear I spent 25% of my recess time marching around behind him (as punishment?)
-Grade 3 or 4 I witnessed a female teacher brake a yard stick over a child's head funny at the time but not at all now. We hide the past to are own expense
-Mr Ridley kicked me out of class in Grade 8 for chewing gum. Wow have times changed!
-Was so excited to go to Stewarttown and get away from my Principal Mr McDonald! Ya no, Doogie followed me ☹️
-Mr. Zanders - Math, Mr. Flannery -English and of course Ms. Mackie for Home Economics.
-went to grade 7 and 8 at Stewarttown, I think a Mr McFarlane was my teacher, anyone remember him? I’m talking about 1971
-Miss Van devalk
-Miss Rudiger
-Pinkerton. Art
-And Irish dancing lol
-Omg yes
-i am surprised I learned how to dance since the laughing was all consuming
-Kind of a odd fellow
-A little lol
-Mr Gabay french
-oh yes of course! He was so nice - poor guy lol
-The moldy portable and all
-Got 95% in French guess I didn't pay attention in spelling. Lol
-I had the best time at this school
-Your Father was a good guy !!!, He wouldn't tolerate any crap for sure, he kept us in line , I remember seeing him a number of years ago and telling him , and thanking him,
-Grade 8 for me. Mr. Cosgrove.
-Grade 7 for me. Mrs. Kahlil.
-Grade 7 Mrs. Debruyn (sp)
-I remember her......
-she taught my little brother in Pineview
-Grade 8 Mr Heinz
-Choir with Mrs. Ortolan
-Mrs.Leslie was my all time favorite teacher...She helped me so much and I will never forget her!
-Love Mr Gardiner's side burns
-He made me understand math for the first time! In a class of 70 kids!
-I had an English teacher named Mr. Flannery who became frustrated with our class and went on strike for a couple days. Loved that school.
-That’s him!... the comic book teacher. Thanks,
-Miss Mackey lives by my parents. I see her now and then. Great person to talk to.
-Poor miss Mackey my grade 7 class drove her nuts but only 2 unruly buggers really
-did you take Home Ec? that's what she taught
-When I was there HE and homeroom
-Miss Mackey would be happy to know that whenever I sew, I still pin ”the middle, the middle of the middle, and the middle of the middle of the middle.”
-Really. She must be getting up there.
-Hahaha... I thought that too, until I bumped into her and realized she was just a kid herself when she was teaching us (Miss vandeValk was teaching in her teens/early 20s).
-wow. So she's about 10 years older than us.
-if you were with me at SSPS, she’s more likely to be as little as 8 years older. She still looks great.
-I was there in 1973/74
-I was there in 69, so she’s likely 12-15 years older than you.
-Did miss Mackey work at gdhs as well later ?
-My wife, Joy, taught at Stewarttown for 17 years, from 1973, first in a homeroom, and finishing as the librarian. She loved that school. I remember many of the teachers and lots of staff parties. In '75 I started deejaying dances there.....always the best participation rate of any of the schools I played!
-Loved the closing song at the dances..Thank God I'm a Country Boy 😊
-Loved the dances!
-Had Mrs. Smallwood for my homeroom teacher in grade 8 Lovely lady xo
-Mrs Smallwood was a lovely lady. MANY fond memories of school dances❤❤❤. Thank you!
-I had Mrs. Smallwood in grade 8. She was one of my favourite teachers. Lovely lady.
-I think what makes this school so special even after all these years are the teachers and staff. They all give a dam! Yes ! The teachers and students all have respect for each other! There I said it. Most schools are losing this.
