-Spent hundreds of hours in the library as a child. I had read all the books in the junior library do Miss Nazar called my mom if I could go upstairs for books. She had to approve what I took out. My sister , Joan Cummins, worked there in the 50's when Rosemary Jordan was the Librarian. The building was originally the Methodist church, which my Grandmother (King) Cummins attended.
-It was actually the Congregational Church. St. John's United was the Methodist Church. And the United Church was formed by the union of Methodist, Congregational, and some Presbyterian Churches.
-Yes My grandmother did go here. Get those two mixed up.
-What a nice bit of history. Thanks for posting.
-I was impressed by the high school students using the big round table in the raised area at the back (choir loft?) I think one that I saw there became a librarian. Not sure.
My mum was a librarian there , I believe would have been late 1960's . She worked with and had a good friendship with Marjorie Nazer .
-Marjorie Nazer deserves a page on her own.
-A beautiful old building
-Spent a lot of time there as well.
-Parts of Knox Presbyterian Church I am thinking???
-I spent a lot of time in there as well, but the buildings aren't connected if i recall.
-Not sure......thought i read that somewhere.....but could be wrong......pretty close though right beside each other I'm guessing!!
-Yep. As kids it was all you could do to squeeze in between the buildings (tag, hide and seek whatever?). I think both structures were expanded past their original footings. Originally I would imagine there was a fair bit of space...which just reminded me of something. Where are all the parishioners planted?
-No they're not connected .. but very close to each other
-You can see Knox Church in the background. This is the view from Market & Church. Knox faces Main.
-Originally built in 1877 this was a Congregational Church of Canada. Following amalgamation with the United Church of Canada this building was deeded to the town in 1912 and in 1925 it would become the first library for area residents.
-I knew you would have the history of this building down!
-I thought I read they all connect? The theatre, Helson Gallery and the library?
-yes. But not attached to Knox.
-My haven growing up!
-I wonder if my Library Card still works 😆
-`the library was the old Congregational Church,
-I got married in that church 23 years ago...
-The building was the library when I moved to town in 1965. It's likely you were married in Knox Presbyterian Church on the corner of Main and Church St. It is next door to the library so close they do look connected.
-20 yrs ago for me.
-Nope in the "Library" main exhibit area. Had the reception and dance there as well.
-I guess I can be forgiven for not knowing since you didn't invite me. LOL
-Hey ,I got married in that church 39 years ago.
